Symptom

Your website only needs a small storage space. Nevertheless you have been notified that the storage space of your plan was exceeded.

Cause

In addition to the files that you upload by FTP or by an application to your web space, databases, e-mails, log files and backups also occupy space. Frequently customers create automatic backups and forget to configure a rotation that deletes old backups automatically. Wordpress users frequently use backup plugins that create large backup archives in their web space.

Solution

• Check how much disk space your website’s files are using (customer control panel > Files > Home directory, drop down list “More” > Calculate size). Delete the unnecessary files.
• Check how much disk space your mailboxes are using (customer control panel > e-mail, column “Usage”). Delete old e-mails.
• Does your content management system create ist own backup, e.g. by using a backup plugin? Backup archives can quickly become very large. Check how much disk space these backup archives are using. Delete unnecessary archives.
• Did you create a backup in the customer control panel (customer control panel > Account > Backup up websites)? Do you have too many old backup sets, because the number of backups has not been limited in the backup plan? Delete old backup sets and configure the rotation, so that future backups will automatically be removed after a certain time.
• Does your error log show many errors (customer control panel > Websites and Domains > Icon “Logs”)? Faulty website scripts can create dozens of error log entries within seconds. This leads to large log files daily. Remove the errors from your website to avoid unnecessary log entries. Your website will benefit from it by a higher speed, too.
